The Lord's Remembrance

American Standard Version
Luke 22:14-20
Luk 22:14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the apostles with him.
Luk 22:15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
Luk 22:16 for I say unto you, I shall not eat it, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
Luk 22:17 And he received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
Luk 22:18 for I say unto you, I shall not drink from henceforth of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
Luk 22:19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave to them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Luk 22:20 And the cup in like manner after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, even that which is poured out for you.

Our Savior, Jesus, commanded that we do this in rememberance of Him. vs.19 This is a clear and concise command. What is it we are to remember? vs.20 the new testament (the word he used was "covenant"). Ratified by His complete sacrifice offered up in the following hours.

When Paul warned the Corinthinans (and us) not to take the cup or the bread unworthily vs.27 ...he was expressing the manner of partaking.

1st Corinthians 11:23-32
1Co 11:23 For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;
1Co 11:24 and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.
1Co 11:25 In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
1Co 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come.
1Co 11:27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
1Co 11:28 But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.
1Co 11:29 For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body.
1Co 11:30 For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.
1Co 11:31 But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged.
1Co 11:32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

He was saying that you are guilty of the flesh and blood of Christ if you are able to look at those elements and not remember what they point to.

It all has to do with the manner of partaking. "Unworthily" is an adverb. To partake "unworthily" is to partake not decerning the meaning of the elements.

If you understand what the symbols are about, and partake with that knowlege, then you are not partaking "Unworthily".
